CANARIE, a vital component of Canada’s digital infrastructure supporting research, education and innovation, today announced the results of a survey conducted with a cohort of its Digital Accelerator for Innovation and Research (DAIR) users. DAIR offers one year of cloud-based compute, network and storage resources for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop, test, prototype and demonstrate next-generation products.
Canadian companies are embracing cloud computing because the technology allows them to cost-effectively build products that can quickly scale to meet the demands of a global customer base. To date roughly 300 SMEs across Canada have used the DAIR platform to support product development and customer trials prior to commercial introduction of a wide array of software as a service (SaaS) applications.
DAIR users surveyed provided insight into how cloud resources can support accelerated commercialization in startups that are squeezed for both time and money. Survey participants said that DAIR:
The accelerated time to market is critical for any business, as a product that lags just six months behind its competitors is at risk of losing up to 2.5 times its potential revenue, and up to 4 times its potential profit.
One DAIR user, Galdos Systems Inc., used DAIR to test their product rigorously enough so that they were able to improve the read performance of Galdos’ INdicio product by 95%, and the write performance by 80%, and gain an additional 20% on both with hardware upgrades to the DAIR environment.
“DAIR allowed us to validate the commercial viability and performance of our INdicio product,” says Eddie Yip, VP Engineering for Galdos Systems Inc. “Without DAIR we would not have had the resources to engage in such extensive early-stage development. DAIR enabled us to evolve our product to meet the demanding needs of our global clients.”
